Serial-over-IP Embedded Modules

Tibbo's current lineup of embedded SoI modules includes three offerings: EM1000, EM1206, and EM500.

All three modules are general-purpose BASIC- and C-programmable devices running our open-source serial-over-IP (SoI) application.

We welcome you to edit and change the SoI application in any way you please! Visit the Programmable Devices section to learn how you can modify and create applications for our programmable devices.

As SoI converters, all programmable modules are compatible with Tibbo Device Server Toolkit (TDST) for Windows. TDST includes the Virtual Serial Port Driver (VSPD), which enables you to use all four serial ports of the module as remote COM ports of your PC. The Linux version of the VSPD is available as well.

SoI on the EM1000 Module

The EM1000 is a Tibbo BASIC/C-programmable IoT module with Ethernet, as well as optional Wi-Fi* and GPRS* connectivity.

All three network interfaces — Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and GPRS — are fully supported by the SoI application, with automatic switchover depending on the network conditions.

The EM1000 has four independent UARTs.

SoI on the EM1206 Module

The EM1206 is a miniature Tibbo BASIC/C-programmable IoT module with Ethernet and optional Wi-Fi* connectivity.

In combination with the RJ203 jack/magnetics front end (shown), the EM1206 forms a complete Ethernet node occupying only 34.4x20mm (1.35x0.79") of the host board's space.

Both network interfaces — Ethernet and Wi-Fi — are fully supported by the SoI application, with automatic switchover depending on the network conditions.

The EM1206 has four independent UARTs that are packed onto 8 I/O lines (with multiple mapping options to choose from).

SoI on the EM500 Module

The EM500 is an ultra compact Tibbo BASIC/C-programmable IoT module with Ethernet and optional Wi-Fi* connectivity.

The EM500 is the first member of our MiniMo ("Mini Module") family. It is designed to be used in tandem with a standard RJ45 magnetics jack. The combined footprint of the EM500 and a typical jack is only 28.5x18.5mm (1.12x0.63").

Both network interfaces — Ethernet and Wi-Fi — are fully supported by the SoI application, with automatic switchover depending on the network conditions.

The module has one UART.

Channels: Squeezing Multiple Serial Ports Onto a Single DB9

Devices supporting this feature have a single DB9M connector and are priced as single-port products, yet pack several independent serial channels.

Have no use for those DSR and DTR lines? Turn them into RX and TX lines of an additional serial channel. Don't want CTS and RTS either? That's one more RX/TX pair!

Our serial-over-IP (SoI) application defines 15 different configurations or "port mappings" to choose from, starting from a standard single-channel configuration (RX, TX, CTS, RTS, DSR, DTR, and DCD) and ending with the 3.5-channel setup (RX, TX, RX2, TX2, RX3, TX3, and RX4).

Splitting wires can be conveniently carried out with the TB1100 adaptor.

How many LEDs does a typical RJ jack have? Two! How many LEDs existing Tibbo modules require? Four. That’s two LEDs too many. Minimalists to the bone, we have designed MiniMo to rely on just two LEDs instead of four: module states are displayed using flashing patterns, while LED brightness indicates the physical link state.
