System Integration
The Objective
Automatically update the data displayed by currency exchange rate display boards mounted at bank branches. The board is equipped with an RS232 port.
Traditional Approach
Device Servers, such as Tibbo’s own DS203 product, are often used. This works, but there is no intelligence at the nodes of the system. A central server must initiate all data updates, which may require complex server-side programming. Additionally, firewalls will have to be configured for incoming connections from the server.
Our Solution
Use Tibbo’s DS1206 programmable controller to act as a "glue device" between the display board and the central server. A simple Tibbo BASIC application will retrieve the data from the server at predefined times of day and put this data up on display.
Benefits
- Attractive hardware cost compared to the use of a Linux system.
- Extremely fast development cycle — required Tibbo BASIC application can be completed in a matter of hours.
- Resulting system is intelligent and proactive, with each node acting as a miniature client that accesses the central server.
- No firewall configuration needed — all connections are outbound (to the server).
